CROWNS

Crowns are used to cover a tooth and restore it to its normal shape and size.

They can make your tooth stronger and improve its appearance, they can cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't enough tooth left.

They can be used to attach a bridge, protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that's already broken. A crown is a good way to cover teeth that are discolored or badly shaped. It's also used to cover a dental implant. Crowns are a type of dental restoration, When cemented into place fully cover the portion of a tooth which lies at and above the gum line.

The difference between a crown and a filling is that a filling is used to fill in or cover just a portion of a tooth. Crowns cover the entire visible aspect of a tooth, a dental crown in effect becomes the tooth's new surface. Crowns are made out of porcelain (or some other ceramic material), gold (or metal alloys), or a combination of both. Dental crowns are often referred to as "dental caps" or "tooth caps".

When are crowns recommended?

We recommend placing a dental crown for a variety of reasons; in general, most of these reasons will usually fall within one of the following categories:

To restore a tooth or its original shape.
To provide strength.
To improve the cosmetic appearance.

How can dental crowns restore a tooth's shape?

Since a dental crown cemented into a place it becomes the new outer surface of the tooth it is easy to imagine how the placement of a crown can restore a tooth to its original shape. Dental crowns are often made for teeth that have worn excessively, have broken, or have had large portions destroyed by tooth decay.

The placement of a dental filling could, as an alternative, be used as a means to restore a tooth's shape, however crowns offer a big advantage over dental fillings they are fabricated "away from your mouth". By this we simply mean, crowns are fabricated in a dental laboratory (by a dental technician who uses plaster molds of your teeth, this molds are made by your dentist). Dental fillings, in comparison, are created "in your mouth" , the dentists places the filling material directly upon your tooth.

When a dental crown is made the dental laboratory technician can visualize and examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements, from a variety of angles. Then he will sculpt the crown with the perfect anatomy required. In some cases this anatomy will be even more ideal than your tooth's original shape.

Crowns to improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth

Since dental crowns cup over teeth, any dental crown that has a porcelain surface can be used as a way to restore or correct the cosmetic appearance of a tooth.

Possibly you have heard movie star smile or movie stars have their teeth "capped" This means that the person has obtained their "Hollywood smile" by way of having crowns placed instead of its original teeth, this in order to accomplish certain perfection on the tooth’s shape and color.

Crowns are best used to improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth when the crown simultaneously serves other purposes also, such as restoring a tooth to its original shape, repairing a broken tooth, strengthening a tooth, covering a tooth which has an excessively large filling.

Crowns probably should not be used to improve the appearance of a tooth if there is any other dental treatment that could equally satisfactorily achieve the same cosmetic results. If a more conservative dental procedure could equally improve the tooth's appearance, porcelain veneers should be considered, dental bonding, or even just teeth whitening, then it is usually best to consider that treatment option first.

PORCELAIN VENEERS:

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed on the front and dentist to change the length, width, color and shape of a tooth.

They are the greatest tool for enhancing a smile, they are versatile and strong, veneers are used for a variety of smile enhancements, from complete smile makeovers, repairing a chipped tooth, restoring teeth to their natural beauty. Veneers also resist staining, creating an enduring white, bright, straight smile.

Are you a Candidate?

I dislike the appearance of my smile.
My teeth are crooked.
My teeth are uneven.
My teeth are chipped or broken.
I have missing teeth.
I have unsightly gaps between my teeth.
I'm embarrassed to smile.
My smile is keeping me from fulfilling my
personal and professional life.
My teeth are stained and discolored.
If you said yes to one of them, then you are a candidate for veneers.

Cost:

Veneers typically range in cost $250. Veneers are considered a cosmetic enhancement, and are usually not covered by insurance.

Complications:

There are essentially no complications associated with veneers. If your dentist diagnoses a bad bite (malocclusion) prior to the treatment and you choose not to have that corrected, there is risk of chipping and breaking the veneers as your bite adjusts to its new position.

Description of the Procedure:

The dentist will then take an impression of the patient's teeth. That impression will be sent to a lab with the dentist's precise instructions of what's to be done. The lab creates a "wax up" - a wax model of how the enhanced smile or repaired teeth will look. The patient and dentist review the wax up and either make changes or give the lab approval to proceed. From the wax up, the lab creates the patient's new "teeth" of porcelain.
